How I got the shot: Candy Shop Photography

Happy Friday! Here is a SWEET set of photos from last week. I have always wanted to do some kind of creative shoot in a candy shop and since it has mostly been freezing or raining these last few weeks it was definitely the time to try!

Jillian had her Senior Portraits over the summer so I knew she would be the perfect model for this cute photoshoot! And dang girl, plz teach me how you get your eyeliner so perfect!!!! This cute top and beanie were provided by Heart Swoon Boutique, it’s always fun to collaborate and bring an idea to life whenever you the opportunity!

SO it might seem kind of crazy to shoot in a public place but just be sure and talk to a manager/owner and it never hurts to make sure you don’t get in anyone’s way! Thankfully the spot we chose was not busy and so we were able to quickly get all of our shots and were in and out before anyone else even came looking for their daily dose of sugar. It is also a good idea to go ahead purchase something from the shop that you can use in your shots, haha so this one was easy! We went with a candy roll-up and chewing gum. The girl working the cash register even encouraged us to use some of the huge lollipops and wrapped shelf stuffies! 🙂

To make the shot I used my Sony FE 85mm f/1.8 portrait lens. This is the perfect lens to get your subject in focus while still create those gorgeous soft backgrounds. The majority of these shots were shot at 1/250 sec at f 1.8, ISO 160. I usually shoot pretty fast to avoid the subject from blurring, I kept my F-stop at 1.8 because I really wanted to focus on my subject and isolate her from the busy and colorful backgrounds.

Let’s talk about lighting, I used the soft evening window light as well as a THIS handheld lighting wand. I love using the wand because it’s so easy to use and it is also portable and takes no effort to set up/take down and you can move around easily and create a dynamic set of images. I was fighting with harsh overhead lighting but I am really happy with how these images look overall.

Shoot list: I really had one shot in mind I wanted to make and it is the first set of images you see here with the bubblegum! I love browsing the world wide web and seeing really fun images and then trying to go out and take that same kind of images with my own twist!

Ok guys, that is pretty much it! Leave a comment below and let me know what other kinds of shots are you interested in seeing? This was super fun and I can’t wait for my next creative shoot!

Stay Sweet!
