Happy Valentine’s day and also Happy Friday! So many happy things are happening today and this blog post is one of them! Things are starting to bloom here in Raleigh and so over the weekend, I had to grab some pictures with what I believe are blooming cherry trees and OMG this was the shoot of my dreams!
I had picked out a really pretty spot with these blooming trees but before we could shoot it rained non-stop for two weeks and all of those blossoms were long gone! But I still really wanted to capture some pink blossoming tree so I drove through half of Raleigh, most of Cary and finally found these pretty guys in Holly Springs. Talk about idea commitment hehe. Lulu had the PERFECT dress that literally matched the blossoms perfectly so we were ready to make this shoot happen.
The day we went out to shoot it was pretty gloomy and overcast! Which leads me to how I went about lighting this shoot. I chose to use a single off the camera flash. The flashes I use are the Flashpoint Zoom and I also used the Flashpoint Wireless Flashpoint Triggers. I used my free arm to hold the flash out as far as I could and angled the light downwards towards my model.
The camera settings I used with my flash varied a little bit in the beginning but for the most part, I settled on shooting at 1/1250 sec at f/1.4, ISO 160 with my flash set at 1/16th power. It was just enough to give our model good light on her face and arms and not have flat photos!
Another really fun and kind of magical element I added to this photoshoot are prisms! I love to use these when I am going a dreamy effect! You can just hold them up in front of your lens and it can add blur, and change the light your image. Obviously you could always add something like in post processing but I love being able to make something 100% unique and different.
I had so much fun shooting this way, it was even a little arm workout so hopefully, I imagine I will have some pretty great biceps soon.
xoxo!
